Im rebuilding/painting my bike as a winter project, and was wondering what kind of seat/post everyone uses or recommends. The only thing I really care about is that is comes in black, and is somewhat comfortable. Thanks for your help, and sharing your knowledge.

I ride a brooks leather seat very comfortable once they break in and i think you can find them in blac
If on a budget, the simple $15 Kalloy microadjust seatpost is available in black. These are fine for all but the heaviest and/or strongest riders, but do not have sufficient setback for short rail saddles like Brooks. Among new inexpensive saddles, I like the Soma Ensho and Kamisori, both of which has small logos and are available in black. Soma recently also released clones of the Turbo and Regal saddles in black.

If you are looking for something nicer, I would go straight to the Thomson elite or elite setback. They are as light as anything, come in all sizes, and are exceedingly stiff and strong. Most of the midrange aluminum posts by FSA, Ritchey, etc. are just rebranded Kalloys anyway.

Finally, if you want setback and something unique, but don't need a long extension, there is the Miche Supertype. It is extremely stiff but also quite heavy.

Saddle selection is obviously very personal, but like the previous poster, my main saddle is a Brooks B17 titanium with some 60,000 km on it. But on my racing bikes, I've always used Kashimax Fivegold saddles. They are extremely narrow and stiff and ideal for shorter rides of course.
I've also got a brooks b-17 on mine. It hurt like a sum-bitch when I was breaking it in, but now it's golden.
The one that's most comfortable to my butt.

Brooks B-17 on the crosscheck.

Neon green Selle Turbo Gel(not quite as comfy) on the Panasonic.
I have easton posts on most of my units with a Ritchey on one. I like Specialized Body Geometery saddles, and have them on most my Road Bikes. I tried a FiZik Airone this summer on an 85 mile ride it was ok but after about 50 in it became to mushy and being so long i could not find the perfect position. I also have a Selle Italia SLR gelFlow that is pretty Comfy. But I think I like the Specialized Toupe or Alias Best. Comes in Three different sizes 130,143, and 155. The 143 size is the most common and is the stock size on all Specialized Road Bikes. To Find the right size go to a Shop that carries Specialized and ask if you can sit on the Ass-o-meter. Really that what its called.

hey a big shout out for brooks B 17 fans its the best! I have been riding brooks for 35 years.
I use the free saddle that I harvested off the schwinn mtb a friend of ours gave my wife (but is too big for her/small for me). It's actually pretty comfy. I've been slowly picking parts off it as needed for various projects. I put a B-17 on my holiday wishlist from my dad's side of the family, but shamefully admit I haven't gotten together with them all month. I could be the owner of a B-17, I just haven't found out yet.
So I guess Brooks B 17 it is then! just got it in the mail today. a little faster than expected, due to the fact that my bike is not even close to being finished. but oh well it looks good sitting on my floor also. thanks for the input everyone.
