Skipping 16" size bike?

I'm just curious about the transition in bike sizes, and whether anyone has gone straight from 12" to 20" without getting a 16" bike for their kid.
I'd like to avoid it, especially since there's a lot more choice in quality bikes in 20", but I don't know if it's too big a jump.
