Join the annual Ride of Silence, an organized annual cycling procession honoring those that have been injured or killed. The goal is to raise awareness that we are here, and to ask that we all share the road.

Save the date for the 2025 Chicago Ride Of Silence - May 21, 2025

Our route typically passes several Ghost Bikes, which are powerful memorials to fallen cyclists created by painting a bicycle white and placing it at or near the site of the cyclist’s death.

Any one interested in making and planning some kind of rolling float display for the May 19th ride?
I'm thinking of a non-motorized float that would be pulled by about 10 or more bicyclist.
It could have one big coffin with pictures of killed cyclists on it.
Or maybe many little coffins with pictures of broken bikes on each.

Maybe signs like:
We ARE Traffic!
We are NOT in your way!
Stop killing us!

Are these to strong? Is it better to have no words?
What do you think?

Let's plan some kind of official Press conference at the start of the ride in 2010. We could do a presentation to raise awareness to the public and ourselves!
If we do it right we will get on some major media.

I just finished designing three 2010 Calendars: Chicago Flowers, Chicago Scapes and Chicago Bikes, available at

Happy Bike Winter!

All proceeds benefit the Chicago Ride of Silence and safe biking in Chicago.

In honor of the tragic death of Liza Whitacre:

A memorial ride is planned for Sunday evening --
"It takes off at 7pm from Metropolis Coffee (1039 W Granville Ave) and will follow her route to Liza's spot at the corner of Wellington and Damen by Hamlin Park in Roscoe Village. All are welcome."

Sadly, this is why we will continue to ride in unity for all fallen cyclists.

Check out Page 1 of the TimeOut Magazine that comes out this week!
It shows Isai Medina's bike and people in the background with a nice paragraph about the ride.

State of Illinois - Executive Department - Proclamation
Whereas on May 20, 2009 at 7 PM the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways; and
Whereas in 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first right of silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed; and
Whereas millions of Americans engage in cycling because it is a viable and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent form of physical exercise; and
Whereas there is a need to promote alternative forms of transportation such as walking and bicycling in order to reduce pollution, reduce America's dependence on fossil fuels, and improve the health and well-being of all people; and
Whereas although cyclist have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclist themselves; and
Whereas held during Bike Safety Month the Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclist to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride; and
Whereas the Ride of Silence aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways; and
Whereas the ride is also a chance to honor those who have been killed or injured while bicycling on public roadways; and
Whereas the State of Illinois is proud to promote bicycling as an alternative means of public mobility, and is committed to providing a safe and responsible bicycling environment for all of its residents; and
Whereas on May 20, communities across the State of Illinois will host Rides of Silence to show respect for fallen cyclists and to raise awareness of the importance of sharing our public roadways.
THEREFORE, I, Pat Quinn, Governor of the State of Illinois, do hereby proclaim May 20, 2009 as RIDE OF SILENCE DAY in Illinois, in remembrance of cyclists who have been killed or injured while bicycling on public roadways and to raise awareness that cyclists have a right to share the road.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Illinois to be affixed.
Done at the Capitol, in the City of Springfield, this nineteenth day of May, in the Year of Our Lord 2009, and of the State of Illinois the one hundred and ninety-first.
(seal) Jesse White / Secretary of State
Pat Quinn / Governor

Hopefully we can get a link to the full-res version posted soon.

For clarification -- it declare May 20, 2009, as RoS day.
Mark your calendars now -- RoS falls on the third Wednesday evening in May each year. By my calculations, we ride again on May 19, 2010.
