Ride of Silence - May 15, 2024 - One day. One time. World wide.

Join the annual Ride of Silence, an organized annual cycling procession honoring those that have been injured or killed. The goal is to raise awareness that we are here, and to ask that we all share the road.

Save the date for the 2025 Chicago Ride Of Silence - May 21, 2025

Our route typically passes several Ghost Bikes, which are powerful memorials to fallen cyclists created by painting a bicycle white and placing it at or near the site of the cyclist’s death.

DATE: May 15, 2024 (always the 3rd Wednesday of May)
TIME: Gather at 6:00 pm
WHERE: Hundreds of locations world wide; Dickens Greenway Plaza in Lincoln Park, Chicago
One day. One Time. World wide.

Communities throughout Chicagoland participate in the Ride of Silence including: Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Joliet, Oak Park and Peoria.

Wherever you ride, we ride in unity.

Suggestions to keep the ride moving and minimize congestion at the ghost bikes?

Should we still stop at each bike? Minimize stops at each bike?

We have a lot of ground to cover this year and we need to be mindful of the time, too.

Blessing of the Bikes
Wednesday, May 16

Join us during National Bike Month on a special day - Wednesday, May 16 - for a special Blessing of the Bikes at Northwestern's Chicago Campus at 12:40 p.m. around the flag pole , outside of Abbott Hall (corners of Lake Shore Drive and Superior).

Cyclists and non-cyclists from all faith backgrounds are welcome to join in this blessing and to bring their bikes, too. A prayer will be said for the safety of all cyclists, in remembrance for those cyclists no longer with us and to give thanks for the joy cyclists experience on their self-propelled travels and journeys.

We're updating the wording on our flyers to more accurately reflect the mission of the Ride of Silence. At last night's organizing meeting someone suggested the following --

"Ride of Silence = Right to Ride"

And we do ride in silence on this one night each year with cyclists around the world to silently assert our right to share the road. What a powerful and "loud" statement to motorists when done in communities worldwide. In silence, we also pay tribute to all fallen cyclists, with the hope that such tragedies do not continue.

This was our route last year - this year will be similar. Does anyone have knowledge of the wards to know which wards this route goes through?

I attended the post-ride event and thought it was really cool.

It was really a great way to "end" the silence and share with folks and get to know some new people too. Everyone was great and the mood was upbeat. Kind of like having a luncheon after a wake or funeral service.

What did you think of the post-ride gathering last year at the Hamlin Park fieldhouse?

We are working to possibly reserve that space again this year... Please let us know.

Anyone in this group want to put together a video submission based on the Ride of Silence? Perfect if you have footage from previous years, too.
