Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

I hope everyone had a good ride. I've now learned that it's a given that if you ride on this course in spring time, you're gonna get hit with brutal winds. Ooof.

I'll also ride to a convient location (for the driver) to catch a lift.

Our fleche routes in 2012 and 2013 included the section from Harvard to Delavan, it was nice nighttime riding, probably a similar route or even the same as Joe and Yao will be riding. You do need good lights and reflective gear.

For GLR it does make for a late night, as the earliest arrival in Harvard is 10:20, then you have an 18-mile ride. Also the train takes almost 2 hours to get to Harvard from Ogilivie. But it's cool that the train service is available.

Also the Harvard line allows 20 bikes, much better than the 10 bikes allowed on trains to Naperville. Keep in mind that METRA has some blackout dates when NO bikes are allowed, but none of those dates are on GLR brevet weekends.

That plan of biking from Harvard sounds fantastic! I now recall others mentioning something like that before but I never took it seriously until now when I look at the map and realize it's less than 20 miles. I may be able to make part of the series this year, after all (but sadly not next weekend).

Jim,   Ill be riding the 200k and it looks like Yao is going to be joining me, we are riding up from Havard on friday, and if all goes as planned ride back to harvard after the ride on Saterday.

So who else is riding next weekend? I just registered. The Weather Channel is calling for a high of 55 and mostly cloudy; let's see if that holds up.
