Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

The next PBP is in 2011.

Any interest in training rides for the 2010 Brevet series?
I live in south east Wisconsin and am willing to open my house for some great ultra training rides this spring. I read with interest some of the posts about riding ultra's in Chicago. I had to laugh at that point! Come to Wisconsin to train for your ultras silly city folk! Drive up rent a car or whatever. The roads are that great in Wisconsin.
Well GLR was started by Lon who knows Wisconsin rural roads. GLR can reach out to Chicago but its Wisconsin rural roads that rule the day. You can bike your trails but my rural roads are still better....

Just wanted to say, Peru is fantastic for bicycle touring! Outside of the major cities there are really friendly people, you can travel alone and never be lonely.

PBP 2011? Read on!

In response to the future PBP ‘11 qualification and registration process (see update below from RUSA), the local GLR Randonneuring group (Delavan Wisc start/finish) is offering up to 2200K of brevets in 2010. GLR will offer multiple distances on the same weekend, however, you must declare your brevet mileage before you start. The following distances and dates are being provided, times to be determined, watch for info in the Jan / Feb:

May 1st 200K / 300K
May 15th 200K / 300K
June 5th 200K / 400K
June 26th 200K / 400K / 600K
July 17th 100K / 200K / 600K
FYI - IOWA RBA is planning a 1000K

Please consider joining GLR via the application on our web site AND log onto RUSA.org to join Randonneurs USA (RUSA). Joining RUSA is a requirement if you intend to participate in Paris-Brest-Paris, PBP’11. Participation in PBP is the zenith of Randonneuring.

Keep pedaling!

Now, a quick re-cap on the latest RUSA announcement for PBP’11.
To all GLR members, these rules are constantly evolving between ACP and RUSA. The best place for updates will be the RUSA web site, www.rusa.org/announce.html

Here's what RUSA knows thus far, as of Oct 2009:

What effect does riding more brevets in 2010 have? - The main effect is to help the US Country quota, although the magnitude of that effect is hard to predict. RUSA has no indication from the ACP that the pure number of brevets ridden, or total distance, will enhance a given rider's placement within the country quota and has decided that RUSA (if asked by the ACP to help implement the American quota) will not use a rider's total brevet distance as an entry factor, either. It's not at all clear that there will be more riders than places for them. In fact, history suggests that US rider demand should not greatly exceed supply (the quota). A qualified rider will have an excellent chance to ride PBP in 2011. Any enhancement-oriented riding (e.g., an ACP SR series or 1000k) would only increase those already very good odds.

What role will RUSA play in registering US riders and managing the US riding pool? - This is subject to the ACP's evolving plans. RUSA maintains an excellent relationship with friends at the ACP and is committed to advocate for all members who qualify to ride PBP, and to insure fairness for all American riders if a quota needs to be imposed.

Finally, for those aspiring to do PBP in 2011: Ride an SR series in 2010 if you can, or a part of one. It's good training and will provide a fitness baseline for 2010 upon which you can build in 2011. Try not to stress out, just do your rides, have fun with them and relax. Or, as the French might say, "Gardez v?tre sang-froid".

There are a few randonneurs out here in Naperville that have been kicking around the idea of creating some local brevets in the Chicagoland area. In RUSA terms these would be called "permanents". I have already submitted a 200K route but it has not yet been approved, it goes from Naperville to Ottawa and back. Here's a link: 200K I can send a cue sheet to anyone that is interested. While the route does not start in Chicago, Naperville is only a Metra ride away. I plan to develop other routes in the next year or so, they too would start in the western suburbs. Chicago residents could link up to these if some good connecting routes were developed.

I'd be up for this anytime but next weekend. I responded on Chifg as well. I know some others who might be in.

(i posted this elsewhere, but i was recently notified of chainlink.)

I've been thinking about how the chicago area has it's fair amount of bike paths lately, and that the only brevet i know of nearby starts in Delevan, WI.
this would be a fall thing, ideally being able to get it started this fall (really soon), which should also explain the red leaf titler.
With that in mind, i kind of want to put it out there to see if anyone would be interested in doing the event. it could be in three length stages 100km, 175km, and 300km.
(red leaf in name because of the fine maples trees east of the des plaines river)

i already have a proposed 175km here.

courses wouldn't be solely limited to paved surfaces of course, and ideally i would like it best to see routes come up and let people vote for them, or add them for next years (assuming that anyone at all is interested)

Ride whatever bike you like, wear whatever clothes you are comfy in. bring a cup or two of gin, flask of some dark coffee, some food and you'd be set.

it would be nice to have input from those more experienced, but i feel that it should be more about completing journeys together and in groups swiftly, rather than generating one's own fastest time.

let me know if anyone is interested.

Hey - - thought I'd do everybody a favor and put the Madison tour on the Chainlink. Remember that it's predominantly bike trails. Open in Google Earth (free download and no expiration). Definitely a great event to consider but trails unfortunately relegate the peloton to single file. All on state and local government recommended routes. Racine and Kenosha lakefront and trails are absolutely splendid - I've been on the direct street route and I must say their trails are preferable.

Green Bay next May!!!!

Howdy-I'm also a 91 PBP anciens and I can share my experiences about finishing five hours late and why(Damn kids moving the frickin' signs)it pays to learn enough french to read road signs on PBP and not to skip meals when doing brevets.

And yes, I have ridden in the Wisconsin April rain storm but not in a hefty bag. How about the major snow storm in 95 or 96? I bagged in Evansville when I couldn't see five feet. I figured drivers saw less than I did and I didn't want to be a hood ornament.*

*Instead, I ended up being one on a bright sunny day.
