Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

Chicago is too urban to serve as a starting location for brevets, and the terrain is too flat. You need some hills for good brevets, and the closest location for that is SW Wisconsin. Even with Seattle/SF I bet that some if not most of the rides start outside the respective cities - a 400K/1000K I rode in Seattle started with a ferry ride. They also have a climate advantage, even drizzling rain trumps our cold winters. Many riders end up car-pooling to Delavan, it's a pretty early wake-up call to get to a 6AM or 7AM ride start.

I'm heading up tonight with Jim Kreps, helping register folks and then heading back late morning to chicago by bike and maybe Metra.  Are you all staying at the super 8? text or call me - 773-965-3396, I'd like to meet more of you in person!

I'm going up to Delavan in the morning for the 200k and could take 2-3 others w/bikes if anyone needs a ride & would chip in on gas....

I have to agree. Delavan, WI. is just too far. We're a one car household and I can't steal it for that long to get all the way up there.

If you have a GPS, you can now download GPX files with tracks and routes for the 200K and 300K GLR brevets.

These are for aid in navigation, remember the cue sheet is the final authority.

Just wanted to let everyone know that maps and cue sheets for the GLR brevets are available in PDF format on the GLR website at: 200 km route and 300 km route. The longer routes are new and are pending approval, they will be posted shortly.

The 200 km route and 300 km route are also available on Google Maps. These routes show control locations and other points of interest. The default Earth view has a Terrain option that replaces the road map layer with a topographical map with 40 ft. contour intervals. The Satellite view can be useful for urban route planning while Street View—enabled by dragging the Pegman icon onto a highlighted road, can be used to display panoramic images along the majority of both routes.

For a more immersive experience Google Maps’ routes can be opened in Google Earth. To view a route, click the ‘View in Google Earth’ link. This will initiate a download if the Google Earth client is not installed. Note: you may want to uncheck the ‘Install Google Chrome’ option that is selected by default.

To display the brevet start/finish location: open the sidebar, open the Temporary Places and Brevets Delavan folders, and double click the Start/Finish Super 8 link. For a bird’s eye view of the route and surrounding area: use the zoom slider on the right to establish an Eye altitude of 1600 ft, the eye control to tilt the horizon until it’s slightly above the top of screen, the eye control to rotate the display, and the hand control to scroll the display.

The routes are also posted on MapMyRide at MMR 200 km brevet and MMR 300 km brevet. Interactive elevation data is available on the Summary page. Route data can be downloaded in GPX or KML format via the Export Route link, also on the Summary page.

Total climbing is ~ 1800 ft. on 200 km route and ~ 3600 ft. on 300 km with about a third of that between New Glarus and Barneveld.

It's important to note that all route information is for reference use only. There may be minor last minute changes and riders will need to follow the official route provided at registration.

Anyone training for the upcoming GLR brevet series might be interested in this discussion of long loop rides from/around Chicago. Better yet, please add your suggestions for good long rides in and around Chicagoland!

 

Saturday promises partly cloudy weather in the upper 40s -- perfect to put in some great miles in advance of the GLR series start.
