> the last 20 miles I just wanted it to be over and the miles ticked by very slowly
We've all experienced that at one time or another Scott. In my case I can attribute it to about a dozen different causes, of which I've eliminated about seven. :)
Do you need to do the 300k saturday or could you come back again in two weeks? Riding the 200k would give you the opportunity to gain some experience and get another, hopefully more pleasant, brevet under your belt. The 200k group will also be much larger and it's far more likely that you could find someone to ride with. If you do ride the 300k saturday, keep in mind that many riders will have a faster pace into the first control since they are riding the shorter route. I think you can expect to do a lot/most of the 300k solo, especially in the hills west of New Glarus - I hope your bike is geared low enough for some steep climbs.
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it in their ride reports, but enduring the endless ka-thunk! ka-thunk! ka-thunk! on the broken pavement of CTH M east of Milton is usually one of the most mentally challenging aspects of the ride for me.
I hope this is helpful, please say hello at the start.
Lee... I did my 200k with the Quad City Randonneurs on 4/21 and now I'm planning to ride the longest 1-day ride I've ever done (so far), the 300k from Delavan this weekend. On the 200k, for the last 20 miles I just wanted it to be over and the miles ticked by very slowly in my head, so I think my main challenge Saturday will be psychological. The GLR Ride Reports you posted should help me prepare mentally. Thank you!
Adam, Kelvin, and other novice randonneurs,
I've added a GLR Brevet Series Ride Reports section on the GLR links page. Hopefully you will find some of the rider summaries to be helpful and/or motivational.
> I'm looking forward to it and crossing my fingers for that "favorable weather.
I also added a brief entry on the GLR home page that lists some of the items I carry when there's a chance of rain. I've learned that the more prepared I am, the less likely it will be to rain. :)
Thanks Lee. I was able to take a look at the cue sheet and the route. I'm looking forward to it and crossing my fingers for that "favorable weather."
> I'm ready for my first 200k next weekend. Watch out!
Good luck Adam. The 200k cue sheet and map have been updated to reflect road resurfacing on Co. Hwy. M, south-east of Milton. I've posted preliminary versions on the Brevet Series page. In the event of additional updates you will need to follow the official versions provided at registration.
Bonne Route!
P.S. I've seen one long-term forecast that shows favorable conditions on saturday.
Just joined RUSA today with the goal of becoming a Super Randonneur this year if I can. Good thing there is a new "American Explorer" award because trying to fit the 4 rides into my 2012 calendar tentatively has me riding in Illinois (STL/Edwardsville and Marion), Wisconsin (Delavan) and Minnesota (Apple Valley). Anyone here riding in the 4/21 St Louis (Edwardsville, IL) brevets?
If anyone has room in their car for me & my bike, or wants to carpool, please get in contact with me.
I might be able to convince my partner to loan me her car for the day...
>Thanks for the shout out. I've updated the site and am working to add image collections from our Picasa Web Albums - hopefully you'll see yourself there before too long. :)
I'm no randonneur, but I also liked the new site. And watch for me volunteering at a brevet registration or two.
> Anyone else planning on riding the May 5th 200k/300k?
I plan to do the 200K on May 5th, and resume in June.
