Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

**** County Road M Resurfacing ****

Hello everyone,

We have been informed that the lower section of County Road M, SE of Milton, will be resurfaced this season. Jim has scouted the route and determined that it is rideable for the May 11 Brevets. Its status for future events is currently undetermined and likely to change.

Updated maps and que sheets will be posted when they become available.

The biggest variable in randonneuring is the weather.  You should be mentally prepared for the expected conditions. You have 7:56 to get to Oregon to the turnaround point for the expected wind conditions on Saturday. If you stop for 30 minutes at Brodhead and Evansville, your riding pace only has to be 11 MPH. This assumes no mechanicals, so try and keep the stops to 15 minutes to have a larger time buffer. Even with the predicted headwinds to Oregon, I would expect most riders can sustain an 11 MPH pace, especially if you team up with some other riders and take turns in front.

Hello everyone,

I just pulled out everything I expect to wear saturday and thought it might be helpful to share the list with the group. I've found wool to be the most versatile fabric for mitigating the effect of light rain and chilly am temperatures.

Socks: Defeet Blaze (wool)
Shorts: Ibex El Fito 3/4 Knicker (wool)
Base: Icebreaker Bodyfit 200 Zip Top (wool)
Jersey: Castelli Gabba (windstopper)
Jacket: Endura Pakajak (ripstop)
Gloves: Defeet Duraglove (wool)
Glasses: Tifosi w. Fototec Lens (variable tint)
Shoe covers: Pearl Izumi Thermal Toe Cover
Embrocation: Cramer Atomic Balm
Misc: tape over helmet vents; two produce bags for hands or feet

Hope this is helpful - good luck to everyone,

Lee

Yeah. Accuweather now has the stronger winds in the morning and letting up by the time we need them.

Ugh. Weather Channel just updated their Delavan forecast @ 3PM. Winds W/NW from 22-30 mph. I've seen this show before and I know how it ends. Grr.

My bike is currently at Amlings, maybe I'll leave with a very low profile recumbent with a fairing! :)

It sounds like if we can make it to Oregon in the first 2 to 3 hours, we'll be golden. Easy, right?

It also looks like it'll be pretty cool all day.  Even with the rain I'll take it.  I can usually stay in pretty good spirits, even with a headwind for the first half of the ride.  If the wind is in our favor at the end of the day, I should stay in good spirits.

Anyone driving up on Friday night staying at the Super 8 and interested in a nightcap?  Feel free to PM me and I'll give you my #.

Delavan weather update

The Good: The first 2-3 hours should not be too windy (forcasted at 10mph or less headwinds). The last 50 miles should include near epic tailwinds (21mph gusting up to 30mph). Might get some sun in the afternoon.

The Bad: The 30% chance of rain is holding with showers possible in the morning

The Ugly: Those tailwinds will come at the expense of some pretty colassal headwinds. I've been watching the forcasted wind speed creep up all week. Rando paceline anyone?
