Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

If you do not want to drive, your other option is FoxValleyPermanent. If you don`t mind driving, check out Minnesota, Little Egypt and Iowa randonneurs.

I think I am going for the 400K on the 13th. Had low enough gears on the 300K, sounds like will be enough for 400K as well. If not, I can always walk :)

Damn, those are western type elevation gain numbers....except worse because I'm sure the are a harder grade.

The main hills are between Verona and Baraboo. There is a pretty long uphill after Sauk City on Freedom Rd. Some climbing leaving Baraboo, then a little more into Lodi. Probably nothing steeper that anything on the 300K.

Ops, I forgot the graph for the grade is also available there. I see it approaches 8% at times, but those steep sections seem shorter than 300K.

Hi Eric, thank you! That is very helpful.

I did not know you rode this course before. One more question, should we expect hills as steep as those in 300K, or is it a more regular milder slope?  I am mostly interested in the section going in & out of Baraboo.

Ilter,

I uploaded an actual track from 2008 to ridewithgps and it reported 10,963 ft of climbing. The 2008 route is pretty similar to 2013.

The good news is that there is not a lot of climbing in the last 90 miles.

Anyone has an accurate estimate of the new old 400K route elevation gain?  I have Adam`s imported 400K route from ridewithgps.com that shows ~4700ft, but I suspect that is an under estimation due to minimal data points.

Btw, 200K has ~4000ft, 300K has about ~9000ft elevation gain/loss according to GLR website.

By the way, David, a flat 67mi in 4:30 is probably right around my speed.  So you'd probably be good to go.

David P, I did my first two this year and I'm definitely one of the slower ones out there (I climb like a boulder rolling up hill), so don't worry about pace.  Just ride your own ride.  The only way you'll know is to try one.  I've discovered that I am probably too slow to ever do a 600 or 1200 because I won't have time for sleep, but I enjoyed them and finished with time to spare on the 200K and 300K (I was the sweeper on the 300!) and have a couple other 200's on my list.
