Question concerning maintenance 4 Replies

Hello everyone,     I was wondering if permission is needed to do a little maintenance/upkeep on an already existing Ghost Bike.  I don't want to change anything about it, just clean around it, add a new coat of paint, maybe add some flowers. …Continue

I put up a page for the newest:

http://bedno.com/body/ghostbikes/details/patrick_thomas_stack

More backstory welcome.

Patrick Thomas Stack

707 N Orleans, NE corner at Huron

Built and installed by unknown, 32 years after the fact.
Chicago Sun-Times - Tuesday, July 25, 1989
Bicyclist struck by truck, killed
A 26-year-old bicyclist riding between two tractor-trailer trucks was killed Monday when he was struck and pinned beneath the wheels of one of the vehicles, police said.
Patrick Stack, of 705 W. Brompton, was riding his bike northbound near 707 N. Orleans about 3p.m. when he was hit, said Police Traffic Specialist Kenneth Smith. Stack was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Andrew, sorry this has been hard to follow-- it all played out in several threads on the main forum due to almost nobody ever checking in to this group.

I like to think I wouldn't post that a bike had been removed if it hadn't been.

Would it be possible to keep your wonderful resource up:

http://bedno.com/ghosts

but make it a little harder to get a nice list of where all the ghost bikes are?

Please?

It would take someone with a bolt cutters and a pickup truck all of 2 hours to remove most of them.

Kathy, who mentioned Kinzie or Hubbard?

I think the Patrick Thomas Stack bike is at Huron and Orleans, not Kinzie or Hubbard.

Jepson Livingston's bike was removed the end of September by unknown person or persons. It was replaced on the evening of October 6th, and in time for his birthday on October 8th.

I just saw his bike there last night... @ Diversey and Avers.

So, Jepson Livingston's bike has been removed for sure?  Can I get a second confirmation?  I saw some hubub, but not a finale.

I wouldn't extrapolate a few haters too far.  Plenty of the bikes are cherished by their neighborhoods.

In Steven's August 2011 CCM video Kathy shows a photo of a (retroactive) new one north a few blocks of the Merchandise Mart on a NE corner which I presume is Orleans at Kinzie or Hubbard, for Patrick Thomas Stack (8/8/62-7/24/89).

Andrew, you missed the whole brouhahaha with the guy from Everyblock and the Sun Times article I think. The rest of the bike was removed by a friendly chainlinker due to charges of "rotting bikes" not being maintained.

In light of the removal of Jepson Livingston's ghost bike I think it may be time to remove lists of Chicago ghost bike locations from public view. Would you be able to help with that process?

FYI, the ghost bike formerly at Lincoln/Damen/Irving is now definitely gone.  Here's my archived photo and info:

http://bedno.com/body/ghostbikes/details/matthew_manger_lynch

This was not entirely unexpected.  It was de-named a few years ago, then last winter crews pulled up the entire rack and bike and set it aside for construction.  I'd added a sign notifying to whom it may concern to please restore it when construction was completed and giving some contact and context info.  Over the months it's been confirmed still present in that configuration with sign several times.  But a few weeks ago Jera mentioned not seeing it so we scoped a block around, all corners, no trace.
