To answer your question, yes, it did occur to me which is why I posted the discussion here. I also posted the discussion here when I was seeking help for the ghost bike and the person that started this group never responded.

Has it ever occurred to "the chainlink" that the "chainlink-er" who started this group might be a good resource?

In my experience, many folks who ride have friends who ride and they point the way OR just do it themselves -- as was the case in many of the ghost bikes that still exist. When needed, folks in this ghost bike community step up and rally to make it happen. And a simple google search of Chicago ghost bikes would link you to this site: http://bedno.com/body/bike/ghostbikes/links

So - it's not hard for someone trying to find information to get to it.

Thanks Elizabeth, I think this is a good discussion to have. You mention it being "unofficially official". If I was a family member and needed help creating and installing a ghost bike, where would I begin? How would I know how to get started?

I didn't catch the gentleman's name, but someone was talking to Jay's widow last night about how they work to find the families and place the bike as soon as possible. So it seems like the group is still active, however I don't know who the players are there or how active they are on the Chainlink.

Some ghost bikes are created by the community when asked, some by friends/family of a loved one. I think this community works well as is -- unofficially official. The Ride of Silence always acknowledges our city's ghost bikes, but can never promise inclusion on a route in any given year. We can and are happy to advocate for the bike's placement.

When I was contacted by Jay's widow about having a ghost bike created in his memory, I wondered if there might be a need for a bigger conversation about ghost bikes. If there was an organized group that creates and maintains the ghost bikes, I am wondering if it is still active? I think it'd be helpful for families to have a contact and a process we can share with them. The same group could coordinate with the alderman, the family, and notify the Ride of Silence so they can add it to their route. Any thoughts? Any volunteers?

I'm working on a project for an Art as Activism class at Northeastern on Ghost Bikes. I used your website to visit all the bikes in Chicago that were listed as still being up. Thank you SO much for compiling that information. It's been VERY useful. I wanted to let you know that I wasn't able to find three bikes that were listed as still being up:
 
- Jepson Livingston
- Dion Harris
- Rob Heinbockel
 
I don't know if you are still following this project or not, but if you are,  I was wondering if you knew what might have happened to them. When I talked to the Park Manager at Kosciuszo Park about Jepson Livingston's bike, she said it may have been taken down when the City did construction on Diversey a few years ago since it hasn't been there in a while. I wasn't able to confirm this yet, but thought maybe you might have some insight as to whether or not that was an unusual practice of the City to do. I know there was also recent construction on Grand/near North where Dion Harris' bike is supposed to be. According to a shop worker near Rob Heinbockel's bike (or where it's supposed to be) the bike hasn't been there in about four years.
