Dave, you might want to check in on the RBW google group. It's an active list and there are quite a few chicago members. You might be able to find someone to loan you a Riv for a test ride. As far as I know, Hiawatha Bike Shop in Minneapolis and The Country Bike Shop in Ohio are the only midwest Rivendell retailers. Riv doesn't really follow the standard retail model.

By the way, Rivendell bikes are sized a little different, you might want to go up a size (or two) compared to what you tried with Surly. http://www.rivbike.com/Articles.asp?ID=247
