Can you still take the bike on the train to Springfield, or any of the stops between Springfield and Chicago?
Bob,
Yes. The Lincoln Service still has roll-on service between Chicago and Springfield.
The Amtrak on line reservation system accepted a bike reservation for the black-out period. It told me about the transfer to motorcoach, but said nothing about the busses not taking bikes. I had to call customer service, and the rep had to check with a supervisor to find out about that.
I did not ask about boxed bikes shipped as baggage or freight.

The saga continue!
I'd planned a trip to Springfield from Chicago and found out the earliest I could take a bike was on Monday, 9/23/13 - the previous week was closed to bike carry on, no doubt because the buses wouldn't take bikes. (Why not front-end bike racks on the buses?)
The last stop was too far north of Springfield to ride south on a one or two day trip.
I've got a ticket for me+bike on Monday; I hope they have the rails re-opened up by then.
