We have a large old (30+ years) Spruce that recently dropped a large number of needles. The top of the tree seems bare of needles, but has lots of cones. Any idea why? Should I call an arborist for a diagnosis?

An arborist might be best, but a quick search on the interwebby-thingy resulted in finding an article from the Iowa State University/University Extension entitled "Two New Spruce Diseases?"  Don't know the type of Spruce you have, but this article may be interesting:
