The Chainlink

As I stated in the wall post of this group, I am trailering my dog for the first time and am looking for tips on how to get her to like it.

So far there has been a lot feedback on giving her lots of treats and making the experience as positive as possible. Rachel's suggestion was to start out by having what i'm going to call "Trailer Time" every day for a few minutes while it is stationary and eventually going on short trips to get Grace used to it. Any other suggestions and tips would be much appreciated.

I've attached a picture of the trailer that I purchased as well as a picture of it's main passenger...Gracie aka the Gracenator.

A little bit about the trailer: it can carry up to 100 pounds, has canvas tabs with grommets so you can secure the dog inside (i purchased a double leash attachment so that she will clipped in), it also has a flag that attaches to the back so you can be super visible.

How did it go, Rebecca? Your trailer looked awesome.
Well so far, so good. At first we just took her around the back yard by walking the bike and of course giving her lots of treats. Then we took a short trip (2 blocks) to petco where she got more treats and a new toy....unfortunately she almost escaped and went running down ashland.....since then, she's gone on a trip to a kickball game. She still tends to bark incessantly, but I think she is getting used to it. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!

Oh, one thing. my dog is pretty smart.....not to brag, she just is. And because she is so smart, she figured out how to open the trailer zipper when the zippers are at the top. So now they are pulled together at the bottom and secured with a clip.
i am at a similar point with dog & trailer... we have a burley, and it seems to help if we keep the top down while she is strapped in (we bought a harness to clip to the floor tabs). if we keep the top screens down she barks and whines. after a few trips to foster beach, i think she is starting to associate "trailer" with "beach" which helps. she does bark some, but she is especially relaxed on the way home, after a couple of hours at the lake :)

good luck!
I just got one too and need to brave the way and get out in it!
Let me know if you have any more tips!
