I tested out a new portable beach umbrella today and thought I'd share. I find I get uncomfortable sitting in the sun too long at the beach and I tend to burn even if I use sunscreen. So I decided to buy a beach umbrella so I could actually enjoy the beach a bit this summer, and be the geekiest cyclist on the beach. I spent a good deal of time looking online for one that wasn't too bulky, so I could still easily ride to the beach without needing a trailer. Ended up getting this one: http://www.portabrella.com/ , because it's only 24" when folded up. It fits nicely on my rear rack, and I still have plenty of room for beach stuff in my pannier.
Anyone else have tips for beach or picnic gear that's easy to haul on your bike? I wouldn't mind having two folding chairs if I could find some that would fit in my pannier.

That's awesome about the umbrella! As someone who sunburns in about 5 minutes I may have to look into getting one like that. I have two chairs similar to this one from REI (though didn't pay nearly that much, yikes that's expensive):

Can easily strap them to my back rack - haven't tried them in my pannier yet but I'm sure they'd fit since you can kind of fold them in half. Great for the beach, outdoor concerts, etc. Sierra Trading Post has similar but cheaper ones.

I need a recommendation for a chair to take with. No bike rack or bags so it HAS to be light, portable and sturdy.
I had 2 chairs I bought at some "mart" they didn't last a summer.
Anne and Dan -- Thanks for the suggestions! Those Sierra Trading Post chairs look interesting -- hadn't seen that kind of chair before.
I also googled "chair backpack" and found there's a whole line of chairs that double as backpacks: http://www.everywherechair.com/backpack-chair.html . Mike, these might meet your needs.

I've used one of these for 5 summers going on 6, it disappears in my backpack and it's bombproof. It's a stool, however, not a lounge chair, so may not serve your beach purpose exactly. Folded, it's about a foot square and less than an inch thick, made of steel rod, chain and heavyweight canvas, so it's 2 pounds or so, but indestructible. I found mine in an army-navy store @ 3100 N Lincoln Avenue, Chicago. If you paired this with a little folding/rollup camp table, you'd have the perfect picnic set-up. Not sure how you'd keep any chair or stool from sinking into the sand, though.
I bought a few chairs like the one listed below for $5 each at a walgreens awhile back. The strap is perfect to sling over the shoulder. I can carry two of them along with my chrome bag and front rack with small grill. It's not the most comfortable way to ride but it gets all the gear to the lake.
That's just like the ones I bought a few years ago I'm tall but not "big" they bent and were "unsittable" within months. The Marts make money by selling garbage each year.
Crandall, thanks I like the Rio 4 but I stll need to figure how to get it on my back with my back pack.
