The Chainlink

Hi!

I'm relatively new to biking, and as such, have...oh, zero working knowledge of "how my bike works." I'm wondering if anyone out there who fixes up bikes would want to teach a gal how this all works, and maybe let me work on a bike from the ground up. I was originally looking at buying a beater bike to fix up/turn into a single speed/etc, without taking my own lovely bike out of commission.

I'm on the north side, so if you are too, and are interested in perhaps hanging out/drinking beer/doing this "teaching" thing, let me know. Especially if you have a beater bike just sitting around and would like to trade your time for some decent beer (don't worry, I wouldn't bring you Old Style). I'm not looking to be a bike mechanic, just looking to make sure I can keep my vintage bike in good shape.

Working Bikes (2434 S. Western Ave. has a mechanics class and could volunteer to repair bike, they will train you.

Check out the Women and Trans open shop night at West Town Bikes too. All the knowledge with none of the machismo (not talking about Working Bikes - just male centered open shop atmospheres). I believe it's Wednesdays from 7-10pm.

Rapid transit also has a class I highly recommend.  It's on the North side. (Machismo not included)

I'm currently working on a Raleigh Sports 3-speed that I'm restoring.   I'll be putting it together and finishing up most of the work later this week or maybe into next week.  Tomorrow I will be building the wheels -after that it goes really fast.  You are welcome to come hang out and watch and learn.  I've taught many an electrical apprentice in my day but never taught any bike mechanics -it shouldn't be much different.  Shoot me a private message if you are interested.

Located in Logan square just a half block from the Blue Line station.
