The Chainlink

Does anyone have an app that they like or a product they use to gage how far they've ridden? If anyone else is working on increasing distance and wants to ride with me- please let me know. Somehow I know it will be more fun with a few others with the same goal.

strava works pretty well for me and i have used mapmyride and a few other cycling apps. but i like my cat eye the best because it includes cadence, it is easy to read, and shows how fast i am currently riding. they are about $100 though, but if you buy at a bike shop they usually can install it for you.

how much mileage are you looking to do and what area are you looking to ride from?

I'm looking to really get in shape- so as many as I can- right now I'm in north center- today I rode to the lake and took the path- I have a long road ahead of me! I'm going to really try to ride everyday

Marcy, I would suggest trying some group fitness rides. Chicago Cycling Club has rides of all levels. There are some rides out of BFF bikes that are women only and no drop... You will find yourself more likely to ride at a greater distance and pace when you are in a group. Plus it is a lot more fun then riding alone.

I second Michael! BFF is a great group, they do Saturday morning at a more stop and go pace and Sunday which is a training ride. I ride with them on Sunday and I am a slower rider (about 15-18 mph) and although I was dropped they waited for me and kept me going. That was was about 30 miles.  Saturday morning is less intense and there is coffee! I am going on a beginning training ride with Chicago Cycling Club today so I can let you know how that goes. http://chicagocyclingclub.org/

The Lakeshore trail is a really great path especially when it is empty. I might be taking a ride on it Thursday between 9 and 10 am, so if that sounds interesting to you, message me!

Hey there! Vanessa from BFF Here -

Yes to joining our or other group rides! Thanks for mentioning Ifi!

Also - try getting a bike computer. Even the most basic come with an odometer.

If you have a smart phone with GPS you can get an app like strava or map my ride that can keep track of how far you go and your route!
