The ziptie on the tires thing is a double edged sword.  In the event that you get a flat, you'll be cursing yourself for making sure that you're not going to be able to replace your tube in under 20 minutes.

I'd like to hear a first hand review of the ziptie thing. Does it actually improve traction?

Absolutely.  I thought for sure we would get to see what it is like to try to ride through five feet of snow!
