Wildlife in the city!

On my way home from work, pedaling north on Clark at Berteau I spotted a Red Fox! He (or she) trotted across Clark from Berteau and was, I'm assuming, about to head back into Graceland cemetery when I startled it by hollering "FOXY!" and it darted back across Clark, crossed to the north side of Berteau and peered 'round the corner of the building at me as I rode past.
If I read fox body language correctly it was saying "Gawd, what a dick. You scared the shit out of me." ;)

This was a full grown, healthy looking specimen. Looking well fed from foraging in the city. Neato.

This was around 12:45 - 1:00 am.

There is a family of foxes that are often seen in the area of WGN TV near Western and Addison. I've seen them numerous time. A little bit thrilling each time, but I had to laugh 2 weekends ago when I heard a WBBM radio story. The radio reporter saw a fox on the south side and was so breathless about it that he recounted the experience in a news story, and the police were called (by the reporter, I assume).

Also, in and around Winnemac park, there is a plethora of cute little bunnies. If those foxes ever get wind of that though, things may change.

I used to live in Rogers park next to the Metra tracks, and would see the occasional fox, and skunk, and all manner of birds. Now I live next to Humboldt park, and have seen more birds than anything else. Occasionally a Heron and even the north American Coot. (small black waterfowl.)

One morning sometime last year, I saw a coyote running along the Milwaukee West line Metra track heading toward the city. It was somewhere between the Western and Grand/Cicero stations. He/she looked like they were on a mission!

I've seen coyotes at northerly island once or twice. There are quite a few bunnies all over hyde park and the lakefront. A few raccoons as well.

The coolest thing I've probably seen is was an all white owl of some sort on the lakefront a while back.

The loop has a few peregrine falcons as well. With the prairie restoration on the lakefront, I'm sure there'll be more interesting birds and animals as they migrate into the area.

Every year some Peregrine Falcons nest at the top fire escape platform of the Uptown Theatre. Around June of this year my wife and I were woken up by this strange sound. I started falling back asleep but Sara ended up opening the shade and screamed. I was like "WTF" and turned over in bed to the sight of a baby falcon, which was huge, chillin on our window screen, grasping onto and scratching the mesh. We stared at it, it stared at us. This went on for like 2 min and then it let go, gracefully flying from our window to the top of the Riviera Building. One of the coolest things I've ever seen in the city.

In West Rogers Park we've been seeing all sorts of falcons, rabbits, possums racoons and so forth. I work just south and west of the loop. I've seen coyotes and foxes down there too.
