The Chainlink

The Chicago Ride of Silence is approaching on May 15.

This year's ride will take a new route, and several ghost bikes need to be installed in advance of the ride.

They are for:

Jackie M- Wabash and Wacker

Ryan B- 18th/Clark

Frederick K- 18th/ Morgan

Yuan Z-24th/Archer

I'm looking for help getting bikes and signs together to install shortly before the ride.

I was thinking of maybe having a workday this and/or next Sunday, May 5 and May 12.

Please let me know if you can help and what your availability is.

Fred's prior bike and sign can be seen here:

Jackie's prior bike and sign can be seen here:

(click the images to make the sign text legible).

Using a message board to organize can be an iffy process, so please help keep it lean and mean by not introducing discussion not directly related to the preparation for May 15, and also by not supporting such discussion with a reaction.

I can take care of whitening these two (Tyler's / Alicia's) if I can get ahold of some paint...

Jen : is your paint still available ?

Yep, two cans of white spray paint still available.  Maybe one can to Dan and other to Duppie?

I'm riding with CCC tonight, but I can leave paint on my porch if you want to pick it up.  Inbox me for address.

Thanks, I am good on paint.

I will take care of Neill's and Patrick's bikes tonight.

How is it decided who gets a Ghost Bike and who does not.   I have a friend who was killed several years ago while Bicycling up near Ridge and Fargo.  He was a little bit older and did not ride a fancy bike.  I never saw a Ghost Bike go up.   What is the general rule for deciding who gets one and who does not get one?

David, anyone can make a ghost bike.  In terms of how it comes to be that a bunch of people who didn't know a rider decide to make a particular bike, I'd say being aware of the tragedy is probably the biggest factor, with distance to the location probably being second down.

My personal rulebook dictates that I need to be able to reach a site by bike with my big trailer without collapsing in exhaustion, which means my range is 5 or 6 miles (from 24th and Western.)

What can I offer in terms of getting that bike made?

To the extent that I can pretend to be any sort of spokesperson for the Chicago bike community-- heartfelt thanks to Dan, YAJennifer, Duppie, Vando, and again Kevin and Ace for their help in the preparations thus far!

agreed! agreed!

thanks howard for coordinating - this bike was cleaned and painted; and if anyone feels inclined to freshen up the flowers (they are still pretty dirty and dusty) feel free to do so. Bike is at 1400 W.

Division just west of McGrath Lexus (the McGrath car porter let me park on the sidewalk while I

did the work. he was pretty cool about it. parking in that area was really not easily available close by)
