I was wondering if anyone knows a good place to park my car to unload my bike and go riding along the lake shore. I am thinking of starting somewhere around navy pier but not set in stone if there are better places. If anyone has any ideas for a first time downtown bike rider that would also be greatly appreciated. And my last question is that are helmets required when riding downtown?  Thank You

If you are riding from the north, like around my neigborhood(Andersonville) I would park in the neighborhood and ride over to the lake. I recommend west of Broadway, between foster and catalpa in the Edgewater neighborhood. lotsa of single family homes and peaceful side streets. ride from berwyn to the lakefront path, there are stop lights on Broadway and Sheridan.

I am not Reba, but if you get down by 10:00 it should be easy to park.  After 11:00 it will start t fill up.

I've often found parking (weekdays, or early mornings on the weekends) at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course area off Lake Shore Drive. It's 3600 N and the exit is called Recreation Drive, between Addison and Irving Park. There's tennis courts and a 9 hold golf course and a big parking lot there. The ride south to Navy Pier is about 5 miles.

There's also a fair bit of parking at Montrose beach, especially over by the dog beach (again, early a.m. on weekends or on weekdays).

Thanks!

When I lived on the South Side and used the south LFP I kept it under my hat (in true Chicago fashion). You tell people about something good and pretty soon it isn't good anymore.

Then of course there is the "hybrid" parking concept.

If your set on Navy Pier come in on the Grand or Chicago bus as there are many neighborhoods along the route with free parking in residential areas.

As a northsider the options of Devon, Foster, Lawrence, Montrose, Irving Park, Addison, Belmont....etc all offer, when ya know or seek calm spots to park and toss yer bike on a bus down to the lake. If you work off a 'L' station you can pick up a bus card and need no cash in yer pocket (OK unless ya wanna eat) to ride the trail.
