Most of the popular and readily-available versions of cycling knickers I have seen sell for at least $50 (even on the low end or on sale), which is not exactly inexpensive. If you take a pair of dickies or other cotton pant to a corner dry cleaner, they will hem them to any length you like for around $15. Cleaner look than cut-offs and still pretty cheap in the end. If you do want to splurge, the Swrve wind and water repellant knickers are probably the most comfortable pants I have ever cycled in. They are pricey (around $100), but I have worn them every day to commute in. They will last for years. That type of longevity, mixed with the daily use I get out of them, justified the cost in my mind. Plus, they are made in the usa by what seems like a pretty cool couple out west. Available locally and online. Swrve also makes classic cotton knickers if the shoftshell look turns you completely off.
