Perhaps "@ Oak Park" or "of Oak Park" would have been much clearer.

I'm from Wisconsin originally (Madison) and my WI friends and I always laugh at the way they put the learning impared in charge of signage here in the great state of Ill Noise.

LOL @ FIBs ;) -oh, damn. Now I be one of youze guyz.

I’ve noticed several signs like that on routes that lead out of the city to a suburban downtown. It looks like they forgot to specify which downtown and then added the “& suburb name” in an attempt to clarify the sign, when changing the sign to “downtown suburb name” would have been clearer.
I don't think it's meant to signify downtown Oak Park. The sign is at Augusta and California. I keep forgetting to look at what signage is on the other side of the street, which actually is "East to downtown."

Well I think it's pretty clear...

a Chicago public scool graduate is in charg of profe reading street sings

-OR-

Since daley has "privatized" so many things, probably a contractor from a different state (or a sub, that doesn't speak english) hung the sign with no concept of direction in Chicago
