What is a fair price to pay for a bike tune up?

"$10 in the can."

 

around $75 seems to be the going rate (a bike mechanic may correct me), but that can drastically change with what needs to be done and what is found.

 

DIY, is cheaper obviously, and will help you understand and appreciate your equipment. just a thought.

70 and up depending on what your bike requires.

 

Really it all depends on how much your bike needs, most shops have several levels of service at different price points.

It depends on many factors.

 

• Location of LBS.
• Time of year.
• How hungry the shop is (often related to the above but not always.)  Look for coupons/deals/promotions.
• Type and value of the bike, how it is used, and how used up it is.  Some bikes may need many new parts (extra) and some BSO/big-box bikes might be more expensive to work on such as a worn chainring might require an entire new crankset if the rings are integral to the crank and things like that. 
• What level of service is needed or what one is willing to pay for.
• ?
• Huge profits. (hardly! -at least in this city)

my personal experience (disclaimer), i had a groupon for a respectable bike shop for bike maintenance that was offered in the winter where i took in my Black Sheep.  groupon was a great deal, but when i came to pick up my bike, none of the maintenace it needed was taken care of.  only the road salt was wiped off.  i still had a squeeky disc brake, and the rear derailleur still skipped (i later found a cigarette butt in there to be the cause).  i questioned the squeeky brake, and the counter guy fiddled with it, but couldnt get it.  once i saw what he was doing, i ended up adjusting it for him, in front of him.  the cig i found later when i went to work on the bike myself at ciclo urbano 

i had a discussion around this with another LBS, and it was suggested that these groupon deals are not a deal for some businesses, and some of these business shrug off their part of the deal.  i was a victim of that, unfortunately.

I used to work at the Trek Bike Store in Schererville, and I'll put in a good word for the techs there.  They know what they're doing (I was also a tech), and a basic tune up runs around $45 dollars.  Ask for Alan or Trent for a technician.  Eric seems to be catching on quickly as well.
