I have a steel-framed Trek 400 that I bought new in 1987.  I've kept it in good shape, but last week, a crack developed in the left tube coming up from the rear hub where it tapers flat near the seat post.  The crack has now separated, but the tube is snug and remains aligned.  I'd like to keep the bike going, but not sink a lot of money into it.

I'm looking for a functional weld job.  It doesn't have to be anything fancy.  Any suggestions?  Thanks much!

I know UV with UV powder coating does welding stuff. You might want to contact him.

UV is great. You could also try Owen at Blue City Cycles or if you're up North you can try Comrade's own Jesse Hautau. jesseATcomradecycles.com. We are pretty busy getting the shop ready, but may be able to help out if it's a simple enough job.

For the future, Blue City offers this service in Bridgeport and we'll be doing it in the Ukrainian Village as well.

Unfortunately Blue City is closed for another five days or so. Sayeth their website:

We’ll be closed til the 9th,
reopening on 1/10/12 at Noon.

Try this person: Bob, Bob's welding.  He has every kind of welding tool including a$7000.00 TIG.  His business card reads specialist in Tig welding-Mig weld-stick weld.  All materials including titanium.  Bob custom manufactured a bike rack for the inside of our new suv and his work is beautiful.  It is amazing to see a Tig weld in progress.  The instant heat created does very little damage to the surrounding area.  He is also quite reasonable.  I will always use Bob for any further welding jobs.

          His phone numbers:

                           T: 1 (773)631-8494  (24Hrs.)

               Call:Bob@:  1(773) 997-0454

I'd like to see that rack, sounds cool.

Lebster (sp?) at West Town should also be able to fix you up in no time.

Thanks for all of the great leads for finding a welder.  I ended up going with Jesse Hautau.  He did a great job for a fair price.  It was great to get back on the bike this morning.  It rode like a dream, especially compared to the mountain bike I've been on the last 2 weeks.  I look forward to the full range of services that Comrade Bikes will offer when they open in March.
