Is anyone aware of an (ideally free) app for current and future weather conditions including wind speed and direction (yup- I'm a regular rider of the LFT...)?

For iOS, android, OS X, windows, linux?

iphone

I ride the LFT almost daily, and use the Weather Channel app for iPhone.  It gives reports on the current conditions at Chicago / Northerly Island (fairly representative of the LFT conditions), including wind speed and direction.  (Of course, the wind always seems to be in my face, regardless of what the app says the wind is doing.)

I also like the Weather Channel app because it gives an hourly forecast for the next 24 hours.

Weather Channel works fairly well for me.

I'll admit I tend to check the weather radar before I leave work each day, just to be sure.  That habit brings to mind this comic.

Weatherbug, I save the 4 nearest points and compare.

Check the Weather. It shows a simple overview of the day's weather – including wind speed, temperature by the hour, and probability of precipitation.

If The Chainlink were to incorporate a feature for information on weather or road conditions, what would you want it to look like or do?  (There have been a few requests in the past.)

http://massup.us/weather

Shows Chicago area current, forecast, wind, and local radar. Works on any smartphone or PC.

Or text A (for "Air") to u@massup.us (or to 773-33-MASS8) for the weather in a text message reply.  Pretty slick huh?

Also, not strictly weather, but relevant:

ActiveTrans' daily lakefront trail conditions report.

  Publicly submitted LFT reports.

Well first off, let's break it down by major routes. I ride the LFT, so how about something that maybe describes conditions at representative interchange points, say Foster Ave, Fullerton, North Ave, Oak Street, Monroe Street, Roosevelt Rd, etc. The twitter link provided by Andrew is a little hard to follow.

Include up to the minute and 100% accurate reports of road conditions, wind speed and direction. I think we can figure out the remaining weather variables ourselves. Maybe we could purchase a fleet of drones to monitor and downlink relevant data and update an RSS feed on Chainlink.

Wow, WunderMap (Weather Underground) is pretty impressive.  Comes close to the finest granularity of monitoring I've ever seen.  But still miles apart.  Among it's many overlays however, I couldn't find bike routes.  Is it there?

If you're going PC, then Google Earth can overlay bike routes and highly local current conditions.  Their weather overlay seems to have dozens of Chicago stations.

ATA's twitter is currently the definitive for LFT, to the best of by knowledge, though they only broadcast once or twice a day.  It's what I use, at least for path conditions.  If you're already a twitter user I think you simply text

FOLLOW @activetranslft to 40404

The subject of "micro weather" is one of my faves.  I assume an NOAA or NWS feed from all available stations (which includes things like schools and hobbyists) must be available, but have searched unsuccessfully several times over the years.  If I could find it, I'd put it in massup.  Assistance researching that is welcome.

WGN has a good app.
