I started a thread of what to do with used tubes. . now. . I've accumulated about several tires from switching out all the tires on my three bikes. ( not at the same time)
I was wondering what everyone else does with them?
Strictly-speaking iy may be against Illinois to throw them in the trash?
I'm still trying to find somewhere that will recycle them and, in particular, all of the old tyres we throw out at Working Bikes - perhaps the major cpntributer to our trash?
I've heard that REI recycle tyres in other cities (EG: St. Louis) and that they can be used as fuel in cement works. REI were accepting old tyres & inner-tubes at the swap-meet at Harper College in Palatine last year and I asked the people there if they could & would accept more outside of the show - I left contact details, but never heard back.
I've just recently heard that the Lakin General Corporation, http://www.lakincorp.com/, in Chicago may accept them and I have tried to contact them, no response so far ...
i say we save all of them up for a year or so and have a huge back yard tire fire...in my old landlords back yard. we could roast/tar some smores or what ever.
but on a diff note there are companies that recycle used tires from both cars and bikes.
maybe this link will help u figure it out..its about car tires but it may help.TiReS and ummm stuff
I bet you could weave stuff out of them. That actually might be kind of a cool project. Anyone want to collaborate on a sculpture? Maybe some kind of animal that is sleeping..."The Tired Beast."
