Untrue Wheel assistance

Hello,
My mountain bike is my primary winter ride. This poor thing has taken alot of abuse. A major repair it needs it a new set of wheels, or to get them straightened out.
Does anyone out there recomend a place to go that will show you how to true your wheels?
I've heard about places that have tools and workspaces that will let you tinker with your bike in their shop.
I do most of my bike repairs at home, but I dont have the money to sink into a truing stand, and I would like to learn the skill.

Rapid Transit has a wheel repair class coming up. I think you will find everything you need at that class. Also, West Town Bikes has open shop nights often where you can work on your bike for in exchange for a donation to the organization, which I believe is nonprofit.

West Town Bikes has a Tinker Town Tuesday coming up. They have Park Tool professional truing stands which are pretty much what you'd find in any bike shop.

Any bike shops will true your wheels for a fee as well, if you don't want to do it yourself.

There's also a free winter maintenance class coming up in March at Rapid Transit in Wicker Park. They might cover wheel truing in the class, but I'd recommend giving them a call first to get details on the class.

True it against your brakes. Its about the same thing. =P

Beware, that you will screw it up worse before you actually get the hang of how to true it.

Youtube.com has several helpful videos and like Jessica said you can true it against your brakes. You will have to buy a spoke tool.

The Recyclery, at Howard and Paulina, has truing stands that one can use during open shop hours. For instance, today, Saturday 20 February, there are open shop hours from 1pm to 5pm. They ask for up to a $10/hour donation on a sliding scale.

I used the brakes method for years - I guess decades! before I got access to a truing stand. The thing you should be aware of when using the brake method is that wheels need to be trued straight but they also need to be kept round (assuming that they are round in the first place). So as you make your adjustments take care to make sure that you are not putting your rim out of round as you make it straight.
