Depending on what you lock it to, sometimes it gets pretty snug if you are removing the front wheel of a mountain bike and locking it alongside the seat tube/rearwheel.

I just use a cable through the front wheel which is probably playing with fate... but I'm always looking for a reason to upgrade my wheels.

Get the smallest one that will fit everything you lock. The tighter the lock (gaps between lock and what your locking) the harder it is to get at it to cut. I know this from experience - had to cut my own lock once after I did something stupid, and was cursing how hard it was to get the dremel cut off wheel at the lock cuz the frame and wheel were so close. If I had more wiggle room, it would have taken more like 10 minutes, instead of 45.

Also, the yellow kryptonite locks need to be cut twice to open, the regular orange or gray ones just need one cut (they have the "hooked" end on the D).

I choose a U-lock based on the ability to lock my frame and rear wheel to a post with it. The geometry of the frame and width of the wheel determines this. Also some large locks enable you to lock up more than one bike simultaneously. I go with a cable for my front wheel (along with locking skewers). I also choose to lock the rear wheel to the frame and post, since it is the more expensive wheel to replace.

yep, my good old dremel with a cutoff wheel (well, several cut off wheels - I was out of the good kind with fiberglass re-enforcement)

And I don't carry the chain anymore - too heavy. I just have the smallest krypto (the one that fits in your back pocket) and my wife uses her own. All I lock is the rear wheel to a post making sure the lock is inside the rear triangle of the frame (seat stay - chain stay - seat tube).
