I commute to work by bike, and really enjoy listening to music while I ride. Like you, I don't like the idea of wearing headphones. I use an external speaker sytems that connects to my iPod, and really works well. The system I use (I've seen other similar kinds of systems) is called CycleSound.

The sound is actually quite good, and you can easily control the volume to ensure that you can hear what is happening around you.

Here is a picture of how mine is mounted on my stem. (This is not my bike.) My iPod is then mounted to the top of the CycleSound via a silicone iPod case.
