TORO - STOLEN

My bike was just stolen this afternoon (July 2) from off my deck. No - it was not locked, but it was visible from within my apartment which was accessible only via a locked gate.

Some of you may recognize it from Ride of Silence or photos I've posted of it on BikeCommuters.com... please help me recover her!

The thieves left behind the u-lock and reflective triangle hung from the rack

Identifying features:

  • Schwinn Worldsport small frame (only 49cm at most)
  • full fenders - front fender mounted back behind brakes
  • bullhorn bars on a short raised stem
  • pink handlebar tape (which may not still be there)
  • bar end shifter on right of bars
  • aftermarket Chainboard brand chainguard
  • front pink Fyxation wheel
  • wheels were connected via locking skewers
  • green sticker on seat tube (down near bottom bracket)- as being registered with the City Of Evanston (via Northwestern Univ)

I got mine stolen last week.  I'm sorry for your loss, that bike sticks out pretty well so I'll keep my eyes out.  

Keep your look out for a silver surly pacer with 105 components.  I wish you the best of luck.

How do you fill the void from the loss of a stolen bike....??? I'm struggling....

Get another bike. (Sorry that is obvious.) I've had two stolen during my 24 years of biking in Chicago, the first of which was also stolen from a porch where it was unlocked. It sucks, but you will get over it. Mourn, but don't let that that stop you from getting another bike more or less immediately. If you happen to recover Toro then you'll be in the happy position of having two bikes.

If Toro was perfect for your needs build another one. (it looks like a lot of thought and experience went into that configuration.) If it wasn't make the next one even better. It can also be fun to see where you can shave a few dollars off the price of the project. The parts bins at Working Bikes are overflowing these days, and people here on the Chainlink often have that one last part you need. Post a list of parts you need and don't be shy about mentioning that you are replacing a stolen bike. Some of us will give you parts for free or for super cheap. Many of us have been there and know the pain and are willing to help.

@Tony - thanks... any line on a decent commuter frame (47-49cm in size) for a build? I got my last frame by chance at Working Bikes and had friends contribute to its build into a "toro" over the years.. ;-)

I had to make a police report about a garage break-in last year.  After waiting for a few days for 311 to have someone call me, my husband called the district police station and an officer there took the report.

I agree with Tony. My bike was stolen on a ffriday. Mourned all weekend, luckily yours and my awesome friend Terry G took me to Hopleaf for some food and drinks. I think I cried. By Sunday I assumed it was gone,. Jami had gone down sat to look for her bike and mine with no luck. but Seri, Paul and Dan Brown coordinated a trip down to the swap sunday. I was over the bike but went down and then found it. Mine is a rare success story. It does happen and has but if u keep hoping its a mental game.

Who is going to help an awesome lady who devotes half the year on a ride commemorating those who have fallen on streets get a new bike???

I've had three stolen since moving to Chicago 6 years ago (never had one stolen before I moved here.)  They broke into a garage and stole one that was hanging from the ceiling, and the second one that was LOCKED to the ceiling.  (And one was taken from that castaways place by the lake, locked to a post.)  It sucks - if you are a renter, your renter's insurance will cover it to some degree.  I agree with the prior posting - go buy another one and move on.  Get a better one first, then when it gets taken, buy a cheaper one...

Seems like there have been too many postings lately about bike thefts and other crimes. :-( 
No luck at the Ashland Swap today... but I'm curious if anyone is going to the other Swaps - Allstate Arena, Melrose Park or Tri-State?

Thanks for the update.  I'd love to go to the Allstate, or Melrose Park swaps although I do't have any way to get out there and it's a pretty long bike ride.  If anyone is going I'd love to hitch a ride.
