The Chainlink

Like most people commuting by bike, I pass a lot of crossing guards on my rides to work (especially since I have 4-5 different routes I can take from Rogers Park).

Tomorrow is an Appreciation Day for these unsung heroes (yes, that's you m'am at the mammoth Elston/Western/Diversey intersection bravely pushing back traffic with your stop sign and white gloves so children and people can safely cross).

Please give 'em a wave and "thank you" tomorrow!

You can also nominate them for recogntion or print out appreciation certificates to pass out. http://www.activetrans.org/crossingguard

Thanks much,

Just gave mine a wave!

I wished two guards "Happy cross guard appreciation day" this morning.  They looked confused and pleased.  Did someone tell them its their holiday?

Yeah, as much as we try to spread the word, it's still not as widely known as we'd like...thanks for appreciating these great people!

The guard on Milwaukee and Noble is our hero. She gets us across in all weather and she is always amazingly friendly to the bikes, cars and pedestrians that swarm her corner.

Thanks for posting about Crossing Guard Appreciation Day as I had never heard about it before.

For the past 3 years on my commute down Elston I've said good morning to each of the 3 crossing guards I see on a daily basis. Today, I got all of their names and will now give a more personable good morning when I see them. Here's their names in case they are on your route too.

Anna is at Grace St. (Abbey Pub)

Judy is at School Street (by the S&S deli)

Claire is at Western/Diversey (Cornerstone Cafe)

We posted a blog and photos of Claire/Clara (I thought she said Clara) at Western/Diversey...so wonderful!

Thank your crossing guard today!

Thank you Ms. Clara, who keeps children and adults safe while crossing the gaping Elston Ave./Diversey Pkwy./Western Ave. intersection!

Since 2005, the State of Illinois has been officially honoring these individuals with Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. This year, the observance is today, May 1.

Thank you to all crossing guards who safely shepherd our children across the street. You're true heroes. Please give 'em a smile, wave and a big "thank you" today.

Learn more and share your thoughts about your favorite crossing guard.

Thanks for putting names to faces!
