The Chainlink

The week ahead looks to be delightfully autumnal. Highs in 60s and 70s, lows in 50s and 40's. Great biking weather, but you might want to keep a bandanna or ear gaitor in your bag in case your ears get cold. I run cold, so anything below 60, esp if it is windy, makes my ears cringe. You might need to adjust your helmet a bit to accommodate the extra layer. I also keep  thin gloves in my bag. Of course, this is the season for losing gloves. Maybe your morning commute starts off chilly, but by the return home, it's golden and warmer.

I still have some extra gaitors from the BW kick off meeting. If you want one, and are swilling to swing by Logan Square (Armitage/Kimball area) to pick one up, let me know.

Don't let "Bike Fall" keep you from enjoying Bike Winter!

Best,

Gin

Ah, fall. My favorite time of the year. No more arriving at work sweating profusely, yet not having to get up 10 minutes early to allow for the extra time needed for dressing in multiple layers. Also, soon I get to use my obnoxiously bright lights again.

It's one of the advantages of riding year round: Your awareness of the seasonal changes increases manifold.
I did the North Branch trail yesterday morning and it was stunning weather for it in the high 50s. The fawn and deer seemed to love it too.
Nice weather but those 6 pm-ish sun setting directly in my eyes, not so much.
So, despite being the weather nerd, I was unprepared this morning. No rain jacket. But my son had on his rain poncho for the bike seat, so he was OK. And I never felt like I was getting wet, just damp. Good for the skin! ;-)
ahoy! my partner and i could use some ear gaitors for the fall & winter. do you still have any extras?
Glad to help. I distributed all of the extras at Lee's bike ride yesterday but I am sure I can scrounge up a few from our couch cushions. Send me at email at gin_kilgore @ yahoo dot com to arrange a pick up time.

Which reminds me to get on it in terms of tapping into all the energy to host fleece cutting parties.

46 degree's when I left this morning. I think I prefer warm summer morning, but my ride was great today. Not sure I will as thrilled when it snows.....
I have some gaitors as well. People can contact me at jami at balloonbiker dot com and I can hook them up.
Rode the Apple Cider Century on Sunday. Stayed warm all but my feet. Forgot that those cool and breezy MTB shoes that are so comfy on a hot summer ride don't work so well in the mid-forties. Because I didn't remember toe covers or heavier socks, I had toecicles for the first 30 miles or so.
Pee Wee, I made up some more gaitors last night and a couple of balaclavas as well. I'm in Logan Square if you are interested in picking them up this week.
Duct tape works great to cover the mesh parts of bike shoes, I wrap duct tape on each of the Co2 air containers in my seat bag. This keeps em quiet and you have a stash of duct tape for such instances. A couple other uses include patching a tear in a tire (place the duct tape on the inside of the tire before fitting a new tube) securing a broken spoke to the spoke next to it so you can ride home. I have also used it to secure torn bar tape.

I am loving that I get to wear long sleeves.
