I was talking with a former landlord and business owner about bike parking at the Fountain View commercial area right across from the Carol Stream Town Center. He said he talked to someone, and that to install bike racks, it would cost $1,000 per rack, for each business that wanted a bike rack! In addition, the business would have to maintain (i.e., periodically repaint) the new bike rack.

This cost seems really high to me, so I wanted to get an idea of prices (including labor) other businesses have paid for bike racks. Do specify the type of bike rack - I didn't ask the landlord, but I assumed he was talking about a wave-type rack. You might be thinking of a bollard-style or grill-type (bad!) rack.

This also seems like an ideal program for the village to step into - paying for at least a portion of new bicycle racks around the village. (Depending on where the racks are, of course.) But that part of my advocacy will come around later.

Robert,

The City of Chicago had a contract with GFS, Guardrail, Fence & Signage to install 1,200 powder-coated u-racks for $320 each, including labor and construction.

These racks require almost no maintenance. They do require replacement when cars crash into them (happens ~5 times each year). Paint is inexpensive and only necessary every 5 years. The City mandates stainless steel baseplates to reduce rusting at a critical structural point.

Contracts between the City and its vendors are publicly available information.

Here's a list of bike parking manufacturers:

I believe that Dero places a high value on customer service and is probably the most willing to consult with prospective clients -- contact them first.
