Sharing some historical information on the Bicentenary anniversary of the bicycle.

Karl von Draise rolled out his invention for its first spin on June 12th of 1817 in Mannheim, Germany.

"The bicycle traces it's roots to Germany where a forest-master named Karl von Drais invented the Draisinne, a proto-bicycle, what he called 'the running machine' in 1817. The creation had no pedals and was powered, like the Flintstones' car, by the operator's feet on the roadway. - It did not take off."

"The invention of the pedals in 1866 soon led to the development of the Penny-Farthing, which proved quite dangerous and was immediately banned in many places. It wasn't until the introduction of the rear wheel chain drive in the 1880's that the modern 'safety bicycle' took off."

Even though the horse and buggy were here first, bicycles had use of the roads along side them and also on the sidewalks.

"Cars have been around for a little bit over 100 years but the cities that are the most livable are the ones where people can walk or bike."

"Today the bicycle is seen as an efficient, ecological and sustainable means of transport that enhances the quality of life. It doesn't create exhaust or noise emissions and only takes up a few square feet of parking space."

So, Happy 200th Anniversary to the Bicycle!
