The Chainlink

I just found out about this group today:  http://travellingtwo.com/7130

Right now they are biking around Texas and doing good.  While I wish I was there right now, I'd like to do something similar.  Would anyone else be up for a superhero ride/service project on MLK day?

There was a Heroes and Villians ride a while back, but I like the idea of dressing as a hero and doing service.

If there is interest, I can start looking into places for us to volunteer, otherwise, I may just show up at some other service project in my cape.

MLK day is 1/17...who knows what the weather will bring.  If it is especially snowy, we could always just spend the day shovelign walks or something, but I'll try to find something better.

What's your super-identity and what bike powers would you want to have?

Kohaku-  Fantastic...a little bit of me is doing it for the cape as well!

Liz- I think that the Chicago cares thing is cool, but I'm not quite sure if it is right for this group. I've done it in the past and it was fun...but I'm just not sure if it's the right thing for this group.  I'd like to hear other opinions though...perhaps we could do it if nothing else comes though.  Do you know the registration deadline?

I like this a lot too. chainlinkers rock !

HNY to all

I love this - a weekend would be better for me. I have a Corn costume, so maybe I can have the power of multi-functionality? err....that's horrible....

I have a "Korn" costume.

The registration deadline is Jan. 10th.

Some other group volunteering activities I have organized in the past have been food repack sessions at the greater chicago food depository, they have saturday morning and afternoon sessions, as well as wednesday evening sessions, but groups need to sign up far in advance and they need an accurate count of volunteers the week prior.  Also food pantries are usually willing to work with groups to help organize and distribute food.  Its also fairly easy to work with nursing homes and centers and volunteer reading the paper.

I've also done some stuff with engineering activities for schools/clubs (girl scouts), maybe people could put on a cycling workshop for similar groups?

Maybe Working bikes, Blackstone, or West Town have some project they could use a group to help out with?

Thanks for the suggestions, Liz!

In college I did a lot of volunteering and got to do some neat opportunities, but that was in a rather small city which was a little different than Chicago.

From what I've gathered about this group, they basically meet up, do some superhero training and then go out seeking service opportunities as they come up.

For our first ride, it might be nice to do that. Depending on the weather we could either do a guerilla park clean up or do good samaritan snow shoveling...or they ask around the day of and find things to help with. Heck, we could even clear storm drains if there is a thaw in session.

How does Sunday, January 16th sound?  We could meet at the Humboldt park field house and decide what we want to do from there. How does 1 pm sound?  We could plan on doing 2 hours or so of work.  Perhaps in the future we could plan on a more organized activity, but since this is coming up quickly, we probably should have a plan for that weekend.

If this doesn't sound good, write here and we can do something different for the next meeting.
