Suggestions for 1st Century ride - can and will travel
I am looking at completing my first century in the late summer/fall and am perfectly willing to travel as well.I have heard the perimeter ride is great but I won't be ready for that. As it stands now I think I can be ready by mid-late September at the earliest. As far as what I am looking for, I'd like something on the flatter side, and at least some support along the route. So any recommendations, advice, or century rides to avoid? So far I have been looking into the following:
Apple Cider Century ( http://www.applecidercentury.com/index.html
North Shore Centruy ( http://www.evanstonbikeclub.org/nsc/
Tour de St. George ( http://spingeeks.com/falltour.html )
Honolulu Century Ride ( http://www.hbl.org/ )
on another note, any recommendations for centuries abroad for future reference would be great as well.

I think the North Shore Century is the clear choice, as long as they didn't schedule it on the same day as any important events that benefit bike advocacy.
The Apple Cider is overrated IMO-- it's a nice ride but there's really nothing special about it other than it having been around before most of the other rides. Definitely less flat than the NSC.
Not familiar with the others.

If you want something flatter, the apple cider century probably isn't your best bet, it has some hills...but they have quite a bit of support and great rest stops.
I've never done the North Shore Century, but I can't imagine that it is anything but mostly flat. It's supposed to be a good ride!
The Honolulu ride wouldn't be flat, but if want an excuse, that would be awesome if you could afford it!

Are you thinking you wouldn't be ready for the Perimeter Ride next Saturday because of bike troubles or fitness level?
I highly recommend at least riding the Lakefront Path section with us. (If I remember correctly, we'll be coming over to the lake en masse on North Ave, then heading south.) It's a slow social ride (part of the reason it's scheduled for all day), and if you don't feel up to continuing at any point on the lakefront, you can always turn around. We stop for lunch on the south side, and dinner is at Superdawg at Devon and Milwaukee.
I'm just saying I would reconsider doing the Perimeter Ride (if only part of it.)

I second the Perimeter Ride. Multiple options for shorter distance bailouts by public transportation. I'd be very cautious about the St. George century-it's Utah for God sakes!

Cam and I debated and have decided that UAR will be the way more fun option, and the NSC will be full of serious people with short stops and lacking in beer.

I agree with Howard; I recommend the North Shore Century over the Apple Cider. Honestly, North Shore is one of my favorite rides of the year. It's flat and well staffed. It's a good scenic route. It is true, they have no beer at the SAG stops, but last year they had soup at one and ice cream at another. So yeah, I'm doing NSC again this year.
