Why is this unbelievable; do you not think thieves carry tools or know how to take apart bikes?
Lucily I found a spare that will suit me until I can make a new one. I am totally going to that seminar tonight :)
I will say as pissed off as I am about this I have been forced to understand wheel part dementions like hubs and axles and such so I order the right parts. digital calipers are so f-ing awesome! Now I just need to figure out if I'm going to build an exact match part for part or get fancy. decisions decisions.
DUG, you're so much less confrontational in person.
I even had a chain tensioner on my wheel!
They were stolen from next to El Mamey Lounge on North ave and Talman.
There were no bike racks, so all the bikes were locked to the gates and everyone whos bike was on the inside had their shit taken.
Has it occured to anyone that the thief might be reading all these posts? Just waiting for the next pub ride to make the next heist?
The use of the word "unbelievable" here is expressing shock at the scope of the theft, not that thieves have and use tools.
5 wheels taken from a bunch of bikes parked on a pub crawl? I have been riding bikes in Chicago for 15 years and never experienced or even heard of such a thing. Even with quick releases.
So, I would say the terms "incredible", "shocking", "outrageous" and "startling" would apply as well.
DUG, you're so much less confrontational in person. If your point is that we can/should expect thieves to use tools, I think you can say so without being snotty. If you have advice for people to deal with this, why not share it?
Unless your only interest here is baiting people and being smug, in which case you're doing a bang up job.

What is your point?

My point - A pub ride could be an attractive situation for a bike thief. It gives him or her the opportunity to lay in wait as well as a pretty good guess that the owners will be away from their bikes for at least 15 minutes. Also, the odds of scoring some better than beater gear might be higher on a social ride stop than the average bike rack.
My point is that if you think like a thief, a pub ride is like having half the work already done. If you assume that a bike thief can read the posts here, the occurrence of theft is hardly "unbelievable" but rather "very possible."
I think a lookout (with mace - just for fun) is a good idea.
Just my two cents.

I have always assumed that thieves will only target easy marks like an unlocked quick release wheel. When I used to have a bike with quick release skewers I would just put a hose clamp over it believing that a thief probably wouldn't bother carrying a screw driver. Obviously, I was naive. Since hearing about this I've just been in the fetal position rocking back and forth afraid to take my bike out;-)
