The Chainlink

My commuter bike got stolen off my deck in Edgewater this weekend.

It's a black Specialized Allez with a yellow chain, and yellow/black bar tape.  At the time of theft, it also had egg beater pedals and a giant u-lock on it.  Here's a picture:

If you see it, please email kcarolan@gmail.com.  The bike was on the 3rd floor landing locked to a railing post, but they drilled the railing out from the banister and lifted the bike off.  Doh!

Not sure if this got lost in the chatter, but we'd be more than happy to add the police report number when you have it, if you want to go ahead and make that listing to the registry.

Nope! LFP and around Chicago Ave. and the river where I work, but I haven't ridden it at CM.

Have I seen this during Critical Mass?

Good lead and that that's only 2 miles from me, so might be a probable place for it to end up. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, in the Ravenswood/North Center/Lincoln Square area specifically.
Or maybe better expressed, on a line with the main east-west streets from about Lawrence to Bryn Mawr. I believe that recently some (small percentage of) junkers have branched out into bike theft and trafficking (they're not scrapping them) to make ends meet (it's become otherwise not sustainable due to the poor demand for metal.) Would be great if people could give a little extra scrutiny to anyone appearing to be working an alley with a truck.
There also may be a used bike store somewhere around the 5800 block of N. Western that may unwittingly purchase bikes from such individuals-- may be a good place to check because I'm sure they'd be very eager to get a bike back to its rightful owner if they discover it's stolen.

seems many decks/landings are being targeted.
I will totally hit you up if I end up rebuilding my old mtn bike. Thank you! I'll try to snag some pics, but it looks like they crowbar-ed the post of the deck away from the banister/railing and slid the lock up and off of it. You can see all the marks on the railing-- either from the crowbar or a struggle (maybe pulling on the bike and the lock did that as it was pulling the post away from the banister). You can tell it was unscrewed too to some extent, but oddly enough, they appear to have tried to put it back together. But the damage to the wood and the way it's sitting all cockeyed relative to the other deck posts makes it really obvious it was tampered with.

sorry about that...:( i will keep my eyes peeled around the albany park area. by chance can you post a pic of the damage. how people use tools to steal things helps me better understand the lengths people will goto to steal..

if you should need parts to build a new bike drop me an email I have tons of fixed gear parts..
OK Kate, we'll look out for it. Let me know if you run into any snags.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we're happy to add any information promptly to an existing entry, so there's no reason not to go directly to the registry and create an entry as soon as your bike is stolen.

Ahh this is interesting. I live around Damen/Wilson and my bike was on my back deck which opens to an alley. I came out this morning to bike to work and the bike was gone... I'll file a police report and the fill out the registery later when I get home.

It was a womens Giant, silver and red, should anyone happen across it.

Cheers,

FYI Kate was industrious enough to locate a used bike store in the general vicinity of Western and Hollywood and go check it out, and kind enough to report back on it-- she didn't find any smoking gun, and found the people there nice, but it can't hurt to check it out.
Kate's bike doesn't quite match the profile of the bikes we see at Swap-O-Rama (generally they like bikes that don't look terribly customized or personalized or used) but there is at least one vendor consistently from whom bikes stolen on the far north side have been identified.
