Good points Dug. As a community we've made huge progress on the outside world, bike lanes, off road trails systems and getting traffic legislation passed, more riders on the roads etc. As Ron Burke noted at the Bike to Work Rally, if you'd told someone three years ago where we'd be today you would have been met with disbelief.

One of the next things we work on (or step up if it is already happening) is getting more places to allow bikes inside. I'm thinking mostly of office buildings, but that is probably just because that is where I'm currently seeing the problem. I'm sure it is much larger than that. Doing this from the grass-roots, building by building seems haphazard and painfully difficult. I think we need legislation.

No way it takes that long.  I have never been able to get my hands on a NY Kryptonite but the orange ones can be defeated in under a minute so I very much doubt you see that much of an increase.

There is no lock that cannot be quickly defeated with a cordless angle grinder!

The only sure way to not have a bike stolen is to bring it in.  My bike is only locked outside of stores, bars or in my gated back yard on my porch and even then only for short periods of time.  Outside of that it comes in with me wherever I am.

Cameras are useless and do not deter bike theft or any crime for that matter.  May I ask what type of U-lock you had? I have the New York style yellow U-lock. I read it would take about 10minutes to gnaw through with a angles grinder device. I plan on getting the Monster NY chain as well.

Thanks.

Good news is that it sounds like our renters' insurance is going to cover it as an offsite theft since it was at my work. Nothing is final yet, though.
