Sticky Brakes

Morning. I've had a problem gradually develop over the last few days w/ my rear brake: when I pull the lever, at first there seems to me no contact between the brake pad and the rim, then all of a sudden it's like someone threw a stick in my spokes. If I test it even when going slow, I feel like I might go over the handle bars. Anyone know what might cause this?

Pads are most likely worn out, change them.

I don't think they are that old, and it's a bike I don't ride all that much, but I'll take a closer look at them.

Various possiblities:
1. Old cables and housing. Check the cable housing for visible wear and tear. If you see any replace the housing (and cables)
2. While standing next to the bike engage the brake lever and check that the brake arms move in smoothly. Slowly release the lever and check that the brake arms move out smoothly. If that doesn't happen, apply some light oil on the openings of the brake housing. (you will have to take the brake apart to do that). Make sure you get the oil all along the cable housing.
If that doesn't solve it look into replacing your cables and cable housing.
3. Dirty rims. Sometimes residue builds up on the braking surface of a rim. Clean the surface with a rag and alcohol.
4. Dirty pads. Sometimes stuff gets caught in the grooves in the brake pad. Make sure there are not little rocks in there. Rub the surface of the pad with some sanding paper.
5. Worn out pads. Check them for wear and replace them if necessary
