Speed cameras are coming to Chicago.

Aldermen on Wednesday signed off on Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan to put the traffic cameras near parks and schools. The ordinance passed 33 to 14.

Dunno what such reactionary/conservatives are doing reading the WBEZ blog, but there are several super unproductive comments. If you have a minute and care, you might want to respond to some of them.

In some countries in Europe gas rose to almost $9/gallon this spring. Yet I've not read about food becoming priced out of reach for the average consumer. No food riots either.

Amen, and enjoy your 5 dollar can of corn. And your 10 dollar loaf of bread. Your food travels using gas powered machines. Man I thought bikers were smarter than this...

$10/gallon gas can't come soon enough.

I propose taxation on bikers in 3 phases. 1) Mandatory helmet law 2) Mandatory registration as a biker with the city. A placard will be given to you that MUST be worn on the front of your helmet whenever riding (for all people above 15 yrs of age (if you can work you can be taxed). 3) Camera's now in use at intersections for cars can record bikers blowing stop signs and red lights.

Enjoy your tickets. :-)

Reposting that cause I'm waiting for the responses to come pouring in, in support of it...And Duppie, ya know what's AMAZING about Europe? It's NOT the U.S. I'm sure business's here would NEVER pass along a higher cost to the consumer...Ever...

Thanks for the giggle Howard. I'll put your name down on the petition as being for this idea.

What do you think your point is?  If I thought it were in the best long-term interests of the city to reduce bicycle usage, then I might think that your proposed revenue streams were good ideas.  But I don't think that, nor do most modern urban planners.  Unless you're trying to argue that speeding is something we need to encourage because there isn't enough of it, I don't see the relevance of your supposed counter-example.

And for the love of all that is good, please read this.

Well David, I imagine that you, like the other bikers that have posted, sit around rubbing one out to the wonderful moments when the city does stupid shit to drivers. Like I posted earlier I really don't like the camera's cause I don't think the gov't needs to be watching us all the time but Duppie told me there was no reason to fight. So if we're looking for revenue streams here is a good one. And the point is bikers do plenty to break the law but this community decides that it's ok to roll stop signs and red lights (sure 6 of us stop but i'm pretty sure there are more than 6 bikers in Chicago.)

If we as a community are worried about traffic law than we should be just as accountable as the motorists we share the road with.

Did I clear up the point? Or do you need it slower and with smaller words?

Right, we need to protect the public from the epidemic of people on bicycles running red lights and killing other people.

Sigh.  You didn't read the link I posted, did you?  And to be honest, that's the real reason I posted.  The revenue stuff was just an excuse to post because these kinds of content-free sarcasm-fests are really tiresome.  But my determination in the struggle against apostrophe abuse will never flag.

Or do you need it slower and with smaller words?

I laughed at this because, to be honest, I did.  Or at least different words.  Although I had guessed correctly at the meaning given the context, I really did need to look up "rub one out" to confirm the definition.

Originally I found it somewhat disturbing that you imagine me sitting around rubbing one out, but in retrospect it's a bit titillating.

Dan, ever seen a biker run a stop light/stop sign and nearly cause an accident? I see it all the time while logging miles in both a truck and on my bike. If we're gonna have a crack down that everyone is so excited about then let's make it fair and crack down on bikers too. And David, I'll help you with your apostrophe hunt if we ever meet. I'm guessing there is one stuffed WAY up your rear where you might find your head as well.

Yes, I hear reports like that all the time.  There's an epidemic out there of cyclists "nearly" causing crashes, and "almost" running people down.  They're responsible for millions of virtual deaths every year.  We absolutely need to raise awareness of this hypothetical threat to our safety.  Failure to act will result in even more purely imaginary scenarios, and that theoretical blood will be on all of our hands.

Who cares about dozens of pedestrians killed by cars every year in Chicago in boring old reality when we can dream up exciting new scenarios?

Aaahhh Thats right I made it up Bikers always obey traffic signals and never actually are in the wrong and should definitely never be accountable for using the road properly Got it

It's moments like this when I lose the debate with drivers when they talk badly about the biking community Bikers are always right and drivers are always wrong. What a wonderfully ridiculous way of looking at things And for David I channeled my best James Joyce and used no punctuation at all Maybe hell have a seizure or a stroke and I won't have to read as much garbage on the board

You didn't make up the notion that bikers disobey traffic signals, nor did I deny it.  What you did make up was that they cause crashes, and the implication of your hyperbole was that they are responsible for the same kinds of injuries and fatalities which justify more enforcement measures against car drivers.

Cyclists are not always right, and drivers are not always wrong.  But only one of those groups is killing people on our roads.  That's the reality.  It's nice to have an imagination, though.
