I have a Nexus 8 speed. At this point it's an older model, the Alfine line is newer and better, but man, I love it. No damage to gears from shitty weather, no mess if it gets thrown in a pile of bikes, etc.

 

But, it's 3-4 years old now, and I've rocked it daily (M-F) for several seasons. I'm orginally from MN, and know some people up there who can service it properly.

 

Who in Chicago can properly service a Shimano internal hub?

 

I'm not necessarily looking for "oh, go here, this person is a guru of bikes and I'm sure he/she knows what to do." I can call LBS's and get that. I'm looking for people who actually have a Shimano internal hub, and have had it looked serviced, oiled, etc.

 

Most LBS mechanics will look at the overall build and think the bike is cool, but fall flat on their faces when I actually ask them if they've ever taken apart a hub, checked for wear, and most importantly, oiled it properly.

 

Anyone have any ideas? Bueller?

DUG is your guy. I'm in the far, far NW burbs and usually somewhere other than home. I think I'm in New Jersey this week.

I didn't know DUG doesn't drink coffee but I do know he is partial to 'Tinned Fish'.

They built my Yuba Mundo from the ground up with an internal gear hub (Alfine 8). Owen and his dad, Alan, are IGH experts.

Did an alfine 2 days ago it's the 10th one i've done for on the route in lincoln square in the last year.
While hub gears seem great from a low maintenance standpoint (I suppose shifting as well),  I like my external gears just fine. Easy and quick to work on with basic tools (freewheel or cassette remover, chain whip and big wrench), and cheap to maintain, and you can buy a standard freewheel or cassette at any bike parts store. Also, I like being able to have a rear replacement wheel around anyways in case of a hub related issue or broken spoke. Seems like having a spare hub geared wheel would be as costly as my entire bike, lol.

Hammer, punch, cone wrench, small screw driver. The tools you'll need for an AW. Might need a snap ring pliers for some of the newer hubs with more gears.

No argument on most replacement parts, unless it's an AW. Even get parts for that on Amazon.

As for your last statement, ehh, depends on the hub.
