So I have a UG chain.  I have friction shifters and no indexing.  Does it matter if I use a UG chain on a 7 or 8 speed HG cassette?

Take a look here.  http://cycleseven.org/uniglide-and-hyperglide-compatibility

I don't know that they answer your specific question regarding chain compatibility.

Having the ability to move to an eight speed shifter would also be nice...

It'll work just fine.

Cool. Thanks! It's soaking in parts cleaner right now.

Excellent article! It was impossible to read it on my phone so I had to wait to read it on my desktop.  I have a SRAM 9 Speed cassette I can attempt to fit, however I also have a Shimano 8 speed on my MTB I can experiment with before making any decisions.

My hunch is that the 8 speed cassette will work great, and that I'll wind up with a Shimano HG-50.  Without looking at it, I seem to remember the SRAM cassette has cogs riveted in pairs in such a way as to be impossible to fit individually, much like my American Classic conversion cassette for Campagnolo 10 speed systems which runs on Shimano freehub cassette bodies.

Someone on Ebay is selling 3mm cassette spacers for UG systems, so I guess I will need to whip out my vernier calipers to see exactly how many 3mm spacers I have.   But I should sell the American Classic cassette instead of screwing up the set as it would at least pay for the HG 50.
