IIRC the steering keeps the points of contact aligned with the center of gravity, and the experiment cited doesn't seem to falsify that as the balancing agent.

There hasn't been a time I've been most happy to be in the car than when Flora Lichman reported this on npr's Science Friday last week. That's one reason driving on a rainy day isn't so bad... but, my car cannot and will not steer itself.

This isn't new science. The counter-rotating anti-gyro bicycle and motorcycle have been around for a long time.

The same thing that keeps a caster wheel centered is what keeps a bicycle upright. It's just thrust camber and fork trail.
