The Chainlink

There was a time when my biggest embarassment as an American re: the international sports scene was Michael Phelps' inability to keep his pants up on world-wide broadcast TV.  I was convinced and openly (loudly, annoyingly) vocal about how Floyd Landis was conspiratorially hosed after Le Tour '06.    Now I have to eat crow.  WTM-F'n F?

Lance is just as big of dick, probably bigger.

It's in the best interests of the sports business machine to hide all doping as best as it can in all sports, especially when it comes to Lance. There is too much money to let what is probably the truth about Lance be known and the UCI is just as corrupt as pro cycling is dirty. Floyd has been in the professional racing scene for quite some time, I wouldn't blithely dismiss his accusations simply because you think he's a scumbag. After all, many of Canseco's accusations came to be the truth.

Lance is most likely a doper as well. Can I prove it? Hell no but what is well known is that he was training while under steroidal therapy after his cancer surgery, I think I read that in his horribly written book. Training while on steroids. Think about it.

That's what the whole controversy is about? He admits it, then accuses Lance. What a bastard! I'd demand your money back if you bought his book.

Be careful, there's more than one type of steroid. If he was taking a corticosteroid like prednisone then it doesn't mean a thing. Prednisone is a catabolic steroid and causes muscle loss among other nasty effects but it is used as a cancer therapy.

I think it's much more fishy that he was working with Michele Ferrari who was implicated in setting up doping regimes for cyclists. Lance says he just consulted Ferrari in regards to medical issues and training and not for doping but that's a bit odd.

Just about everyone at that level of sport has "personality issues." It's part of what gets them to that level.

By now, i'm willing to bet that Lance has "donated" gallons of blood & urine at the contols. Don't you think that by now they'd have something more substantial than innuendo and snark to work with?

Really, as much as i love the sport, i could give a flying Philadelphia F*** who dopes. It's their health on the line by their choice. WADA and other crusaders are -in my view-latter day witch hunters.

I think that without 'personality issues' they wouldn't be there. It takes a rather obsessive type of person to do the training volume required to be on a pro level and living out of motel rooms/cars/whatever for half the year while you're traveling and racing probably doesn't help at all.

Snark is one of the few things I do well, Mike!

All kidding aside, I don't care what individual athletes do either. It's shameful that we live in a society that worships at the Alter of Celebrity but whatever, as long I don't carry that on to my kids. Looking forward to another 3 weeks of racing on the TdF and quite honestly I don't care who wins, I enjoy watching it for the event that it is.

Regarding Lance: I'm awfully glad he and his circus ain't on Ragbrai anymore. He couldn't handle riding in Iowa!

Thank you, S, for the reminder on the type of steroid. I read his marginally interesting book in such a hurry that I don't recall if it was mentioned what type of steroidal therapy he was on.

I'm always happy to be proven wrong.

Cheers!
