Rethreading pedal/crank interface

I screwed up.

I installed a pedal crooked and essentially re-tapped the crank arm by mistake. Is their a local shop (Wicker Park/ UKE Village) that could fix this mess. My left foot feels a little drunk when i ride.

Here's what i'm working with: Steel cottered French Crank and pedals.

If they could tap the crank to except modern pedals that would be a plus.

What do you think? Should I trash the crank and buy one of those new fancy bottom brackets and cranks? I'd rather keep this cheap as it's my winter/beater bike.

Rapid Transit has the tapping tools, but depending on the condition of the threads it may not work. I'd suggest not riding it, as that only increases the risk of ripping out the threads.

By this, am I to assume the thread is currently M14x1.25 French standard?
If so, it is possible to modify that to a 9/16-20 standard road pedal thread...
It is also just as easy to buy a metric tap and personally fix your mistake.

I usually find that the cost of tools is usually about equal to the cost of shop labor at the LBS. I almost always spring for the cost of the tools. But at 39.95 for the park tap I am going to guess that paying for the labor would be less expensive.

Although i do love new tools. This would be new tool territory for me though.

I'm not riding the bike now, i've retired the French bike and I'm riding an bridgestone mtb thats a little too small for me. I'm thinking about selling the mtb to fun the repair the the bike in question here.

I meant the French standard tap that fits your existing thread (M14x1.25).

I would not really suggest modifying your crank to a 9/16-20 thread yourself. You have to align a (sometimes) fairly complex compound angle to make sure you don't thread off axis. That would mean you end up with what you already have---an eccentric pedal rotation.

It should be fairly easy to find a used steel crankarm or complete crankset on ebay or Craigslist. There are also various swap meets coming up. What make is the crank? There were a LOT of cottered-crank French bikes sold around these parts back in the day. You may even try some older LBS or maybe Working Bikes and see if they'll let you rummage their used parts bins. Just my 2 cents...

Retapping a French threaded crank arm to BSC is not an uncommon repair. Neither is chasing the French threads to correct the booboo. I just had to do it last week. The tough part is finding a LH 14x1.25 tap to do it yourself. The French RH tap can be found at Menards.

Like mike w. asked, what do you have? Cottered? Tapered?

After learning that this is a common repair. I took the bike to Quick Release (north ave. and ashland ave.), and they fixed right up in a flash. I read on the Chicago Bike Review website that they specialize in older and/or french bike repairs.

Fifteen dollars later, i'm back on the road. Thanks for your input guys!

And we were talking about a steel, cottered, left side, Universal branded, crank arm.
