The Chainlink

I'm restoring a 1979 Rampar Touring 14 and one of the bar end shifters appears to be broken. Inside the shifters there is a notched "gear" with a mechanism so that it can only turn in one direction. On the working shifter when you shift in one direction the gear doesn't rotate, and when you shift the other direction it does rotate and clicks. On the other one the gear does not rotate, no matter what direction you shift it in. Does anyone have any experience with this problem?

Vagely remember the name Rampar.  Is it a Raleigh?  I'd have to see the shifter.  I'm guessing it's SunTour.  I have some.  PM me if you don't come up with a solution,  I'm guessing a SunTour would be a good replacement.

Right on both counts. Rampar was made by Raleigh in Japan, and just about everything on the bike is Suntour. Thanks, I'll see whether or not I can fix them this weekend.
